About Alan Capp

Born and educated in Ballarat, Alan first worked for Bruce Small at his Malvern Star bike shop, where he learnt the art of being a salesman and bicycle mechanic. By the age of 18 he was managing the Ballarat operations.

Alan served for 4 1/2 years in the Army, in Australia and Borneo, and was involved in Engineering, Construction and Mechanical Equipment. During this period his mother had moved to Wangaratta, and on discharge from the Army, Alan came to make his home in Wangaratta.

Realising that there was a real demand for cars in the area Alan, with Ted Wettern as partner, started buying and selling from home. The business grew and Alan purchased land in Faithful St, Wangarattta, to develop into his used car yard.

An arrangement with Clive Schielbs (West City Autos) allowed Alan to sell Chrysler, and to have them serviced at West City Autos, thereby avoiding the need to open a workshop.

In 1960 General Motors approached Alan to become a Holden Dealer, and eventually he accepted. The business required a new site and the present premises at 23-49 Tone Rd, were designed and built ready for use in 1969.
